A new course on Reducing RiskyDrinking has been co-developed by APNA (the peak professional association for nurses working in primary care) and the Bayside Medicare Local.
The course focuses on the new NHMRC alcohol guidelines and SBIRT, which is a clinical strategy for identifying and managing risky drinkers. The acronym refers to the components of the strategy, which are screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment. They are providing a comprehensive educational course for primary health care nurses has been developed on Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for addressing risky alcohol use in primary health.
This course is an online learning module which will enable primary health care nurses to:
- Recognise risky drinking and its harms
- Advise patients on standard drinks and the NHMRC alcohol guidelines
- Engage patients about their drinking
- Conduct SBIRT in your practice
- Support your colleagues to conduct SBIRT; and
- Champion alcohol awareness in your clinic.
Completion of the course will account for 1 CPD hour.
