The Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse World Health Organization, in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, have developed the Draft International Standards For The Treatment Of Drug Use Disorders.
The document is approximately 100 pages long and has 5 sections:
Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 2: Key Principles and Standards for the Treatment of Drug Use Disorders
Chapter 3: Treatment Modalities and Interventions
Chapter 4: Special Populations
Chapter 5: Characteristics of an Effective System to Deliver Services for the Treatment of Drug Use Disorders
The treatment modalities section comprises 6 service types:
Community Based Outreach
Screening, Brief Interventions, and Referral to Treatment
Short-Term In-Patient or Residential Treatment
Long-Term Residential Treatment
The WHO is seeking international feedback from member nations. The WHO is very interested in feedback from Australia – given our well-developed drug and alcohol treatment system and considerable nursing workforce in this field.
The outpatient section (pages 35-49) contains multiple sections that are relevant to nursing.
