The Drug and Alcohol Nurses of Australasia (DANA) position on the Recruitment and Selection of Drug and Alcohol Nurse Practitioners (NP), Nurse Practitioner Candidates (NPC)/ Transitional Nurse Practitioners (TNP) and Drug and Alcohol Nurses should be undertaken by a recruitment panel that includes an experienced and qualified Drug and Alcohol NP or Drug and Alcohol Nurse.
Accordingly, we have developed a draft position statement and we would like you feedback on the document. It would be a great help if you used ‘track changes;’ in the word document that is available to download below.

We had a fantastic response, so much so that we are now undertaking a more extensive research project and would like to learn even more, especially if you have been impacted by social distancing, healthcare rationing, redeployment or other issues related to COVID19 .

We are inviting Expressions of Interest from DANA’s New Zealand members to contribute to a review of the DANA Specialist Nursing Standards and Competencies document (click HERE to download)
Between 2009 – 2011, the original standards were developed by a team of DANA clinicians, educators, and researchers. These standards form the framework that guides our AOD Nursing practice today. To ensure that the document remains contemporary, DANA is conducting a review of the contents and we are seeking some assistance from our New Zealand members.

The Clinical Care Standards for Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment (the Standards) outline the core elements of care that underpin treatment within the alcohol and other drug treatment sector in NSW.
These standards apply to all alcohol and drug treatment service types and locations and do not identify specific interventions used in treatment. The intention is to detail foundational elements of care, support clinical decision making and complement rather than replicate other sources of information that guide the delivery of high-quality and safe treatment.

We will host our first Annual General Meeting (AGM) using Zoom technology on Thursday 13th August 2020 from 05:00 pm – 06:00 pm.
One of the items to be addressed at the AGM is the election of the DANA Management Committee. The following positions on the Management Committee are now open for nomination:

- DANA Officer – Nurse Practitioners
- DANA Officer – Research

2020 designated has been designated The Year of the Nurse and Midwife. This is especially poignant when we consider the work being undertaken by nurses across the world in response to COVID-19. So let us commemorate the work of more than 20 million nurses across the world on May 12th, International Nurses Day.
This date was chosen to honour the work of Florence Nightingale. This is her 200th birthday.
One of her many quotes still seems as relevant today as when she wrote it in 1863: “Money cannot replace…the loss of a well-trained nurse by preventable disease1.”
