In 1997, the World Health Organization sponsored the development of the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) to address the need for a reliable, culturally adaptable, valid screening test for problematic or risky substance use. Further details on the ASSIST can be obtained here.

Because internationally the ASSIST is becoming one of the dominant screening tests, there is an urgent need to train key trainers who can then conduct further training and capacity building within their own countries using the ASSIST as the centrepiece of a public health intervention in health care and social service delivery systems.

There is a comprehensive online training package and it is free! There are 2 options, ASSIST training or ASSIST train-the trainer. Rural and Remote Drug and Alcohol Education

The College of Nursing is offering an on-line course in the

“Management of Emergency Presentations of Drug and Alcohol  Use”

This 75 hour online course, over 12 weeks includes the following topics:

• Introduction to drug and alcohol policy
• Attitudes and values around drug and alcohol use
• Management of intoxication, overdose and withdrawal
• Drug and alcohol assessment
• Overview of treatment options

The following information relates to the Queensland Mental Health Scholarship Scheme for 2013. Scholarship recipients are eligible to receive $1,000 per subject for study completed in 2013. Consider applying for a scholarship to help support your  postgraduate studies.

The following list of priorities has been identified for 2013 based on areas of future service growth and the skill needs of the workforce to support this growth, these priorities will however not be the only criteria on which applications are assessed.  Everyone is encouraged to apply for a scholarship even if their work / study area is not listed below.

The scholarship selection process is very competitive and it is important that applicants submit the best application they can.  To help applicants the assessment criteria that  need to address are set out.  Applicants should also be advised to familiarise themselves with the Queensland Plan for Mental Health 2007-2017 http://www.health.qld.gov.au/mentalhealth/abt_us/qpfmh/default.asp before answering the criteria.

AC1:         Demonstrate your understanding of how the course you wish to undertake is identified as a priority in the Queensland Plan for Mental Health 2007-2017.
