Position Summary:
A vacancy exists in the above unit for a highly motivated Clinical Nurse Consultant (Grade 2) with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team. The Clinical Nurse Consultant is responsible for the provision of comprehensive drug and alcohol clinical consultancy and determining appropriate treatment plans and solutions to queries, including providing accurate advice to health professionals within their scope of practice. The CNC will carry out their duties while working in tandem with the Psychiatric Alcohol and Non-Prescription Drug Assessment (PANDA) Unit, and the Hospital Drug and Alcohol Consultation Liaison (HDA-CL) team in the assessment and management of patients with drug and alcohol related conditions during hospital presentations and/or during care.
As part of the Drug and Alcohol Specialist Advisory Service (DASAS) team, the CNC will be the point of contact for DASAS and will work in collaboration with Alcohol and Drug Staff Specialists and Counsellors. DASAS is a 24/7 NSW state-wide 24/7 telephone service that offers advice to health professionals on the clinical management of patients with Alcohol and other Drug (AOD) concerns.

About the Role
The endorsed Drug and Alcohol (D&A) Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide advanced senior nursing practice and expert clinical consultation and advice to Mental Health Drug and Alcohol (MHDA) services. The D&A NP will also liaise across other relevant services who are working with D&A Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) consumers who have severe and/or complex substance use issues to improve their health outcomes.
The D&A NP will provide operational support for OTP and is able to work autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and extended clinical role. This includes assessment and management of consumers using nursing knowledge and skills and may include, but is not limited to the direct referral of consumer’s to other health care professional, prescribing medications and ordering diagnostic investigations. This position drives access to timely support and appropriate specialist intervention for Drug and Alcohol consumers in line with NSW Health strategic objectives.
The scope of practice of the nurse practitioner is determined by the context in which the nurse practitioner is authorised to practice, the education and level of competence of the individual and forms part of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Safety and Quality Framework.

The Rural and Remote Mental Health Program is currently seeking a Clinical Nurse Consultant to join their team on a temporary full time basis for six months with the possibility of extension. This position requires the incumbent to fly in and out from Townsville to Palm Island.
The Clinical Nurse Consultant will travel regularly to Palm Island and will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team and other service providers to provide specialist mental health and alcohol and drugs interventions for community members, (and their families) across the lifespan who experience complex and severe problems relating to their mental health and/or alcohol, or other drug use disorders.

The Geelong Withdrawal Unit provides a residential medicated withdrawal service for those who are seeking to recover from alcohol and other drugs issues. Clients reside in the Unit during their episode of care and are provided with all meals and facilities. Clients can remain in the programme for a further 21 days (Stage 2) post their medicated withdrawal (Stage 1) to stabilise and plan for their recovery post discharge.
Nursing staff are employed to cover the 24-hour period with clinical supervision provided by the Nursing Coordinator and Visiting Medical Officer (GP).
